How this calculator works
The calculator uses three inputs to estimate a daily protein target:
- Body weight is the base of the formula. Protein need is calculated in grams per kilogram of body weight (g/kg), not a flat number for every woman. You enter your weight, the calculator converts to kilograms if needed (pounds divided by 2.2), then multiplies by the appropriate g/kg factor.
- Age shifts the multiplier upward. After roughly age 40, skeletal muscle becomes less efficient at using dietary protein to build and repair tissue — a phenomenon researchers call anabolic resistance. The calculator applies a higher g/kg range for women over 40, over 50, and over 65 to compensate.
- Activity level shifts the multiplier further. Sedentary inputs use the lower end of the guideline range; regular resistance training or high-volume activity pulls toward the high end or above it.
